BFAR Visits Pond Area Site in Bohol

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) conducted a site inspection in the promising pond project of FISH Visayas (AFOS Foundation) located in Barangay Aguining, Pres. Carlos P. Garcia, Bohol on August 27, 2021.

BFAR, the government agency responsible for the development, improvement, management, and conservation of the country’s fisheries and aquatic resources, observed the actual work done in the pond area. The activity was joined by PO and FO members.
The BFAR Agriculturist and Aquatic Technician shared pieces of advice and recommendations on the design of the ongoing pond construction. The group was also taught about techniques on how to feed the mangrove crabs should there be scarcity of fish meal.

BFAR also recommended that polyculture be integrated with the project. Polyculture is the simultaneous cultivation or growth of two or more compatible plants or organisms, especially crops or fish in a single area. By adding milkfish, the oxygen levels in the pond will increase.

The market and demand for mangrove crabs are growing in local and export markets. It is not only known for its delectable taste, but its convenience in transporting as well. This species’ compatibility with polyculture is also an edge as it can cohabit with tilapia, siganids, and milkfish.

These valuable inputs are set to help the exponential growth of the project. With this, the PO members are both informed and encouraged to engage in Mangrove Crab Farming which is one of the many programs of AFOS.
