LGU MAO, LGU MENRO Holds Culmination Program of the Solid Waste Management Program and Coastal Project in Ayungon and La Libertad, Negros Oriental

LGU MAO and LGU MENRO have conducted a closing and culmination program of the Solid Waste Management Program (SWM) and Coastal Project in Ayungon and La Libertad, Negros Oriental.

The closing and culmination program was held at Barangay Ayungon and La Libertad, Negros Oriental, on February 23-24, 2022, and was attended by FISH Visayas Project beneficiaries.

The program aims to encourage the Local Government Unit through the SB Chair on Environment, the Barangay Solid Waste Management Committee, and the fisherfolk beneficiaries. This is to sustainably pursue and conduct various activities in the SWM Coastal Clean-up project in their areas. Most importantly, it is supported by LGU ordinances or the Barangay resolutions to institutionalize these activities.

In this one day Closing Program of the SWM Coastal Cleanup in Ayungon and La Libertad, vital activities were conducted such as reviewing learnings, discussing the way forward measures, and following step activities. The event also received support and call-to-action from the LGU or the Barangay to sustainably conduct Solid Waste Management and Coastal Clean-up.

For a long time, humans’ garbage has been harmful to our environment. Humans produce far too much garbage and cannot dispose of it responsibly. As a result, landfills and oceans overflow with waste that isn’t biodegradable or cannot be recycled adequately. Consider the case of plastic trash. According to a recent study, only 9% of the 6.3 billion metric tons of plastic trash created has been recycled.

Aside from the unpleasant appearance, the negative consequences of poor waste management also impact a country’s total economy. To counteract the disadvantages of poor waste management, the government must spend a significant amount of money. Furthermore, oil spills and chemical leaching that causes soil and water contamination pose a significant hazard to animals that rely on the environment. Finally, burning any dumped rubbish or plastic items pollutes the air and the ecosystem.

Even though we are all familiar with conventional waste management procedures such as incineration, landfills, biological processing, recycling, and energy conservation, we live in a world that is littered. Recycling and renewable energy propelled us forward, yet the negative consequences of poor waste management keep tormenting us.

The Solid Waste Management Program and Coastal Project aims to save the ocean and the land. Moreover, it will save the lives of all the living things, particularly humans in the area.

The Solid Waste Management and Coastal Clean-up is a series of activities conducted in LGU Ayungon and LGU La Libertad and started with the first phase conducted on October 28-29, 2021, where coastal clean-up tools were turned over and conducted the demo coastal clean-up.

The second phase was conducted last November 24-25, 2021, and significant activities were conducted, including coastal clean-up, reef and MPA clean-up/assessment, and Bokashi and eco-bricks training in LGU Ayungon and La Libertad.
