La Libertad, Negros Oriental – Sixty-six (66) fishers from the six people’s organizations from BUGSAY Mangingisda completed the Financial Literacy Training from May 17 -18, 2023 in Lalimar Beach Resort, La Libertad, Negros Oriental.
The training concentrates on capacitating fishers in making financial decision-making. Significantly, the activity does not only focus on upscaling knowledge and understanding of financial concepts and risks but also on the skills, motivation, and confidence of the people’s organizations in applying such knowledge and understanding to making effective decisions across a range of financial contexts, and further improving the financial well-being of their respective families and community.
Notably, the training is structured specifically for the participants, who are fishers integrating sections in resource protection, fostering sustainable fisheries and inclusive habitats. The thematic schemes include sustainable fishing methods and practices, at the same time partaking knowledge and understanding of cooperative and traditional saving methods, entrepreneurial development, micro insurance, prudent borrowing and value of emergency funds. Facilitated by the project’s main partner in Negros Oriental, the DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative, the training employed an interactive training structure in the form of games. The 66 participants of the training come from the partner people’s organizations of the FISH Visayas Project in La Libertad as follows:
