La Libertad, Negros Oriental – On November 28, 2023, a total of 422 fishers and fish farmers completed the Sustainable Coastal Development Practices and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Information Drive, an initiative spearheaded by the FISH Visayas Project. Given the vast scope of Coastal Resource Management (CRM), the program honed on the critical aspect of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), Solid Waste Management and Climate Change.

Maintenance of MPAs hinges on the local community’s understanding of their crucial role in preserving and safeguarding marine ecosystems. La Libertad, Negros Oriental, is home to three MPAs, two of which are currently undergoing development.

In this connection, the information drive aspires to play a key role in arming coastal residents of the six barangays in La Libertad with the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure the sustainability of their MPAs. Through heightened awareness and understanding, one of the primary objectives of the project is to empower individuals to champion marine conservation actively, thereby contributing to the preservation of these invaluable ecosystems and their income and livelihood in the fishing industry.

Noteworthy progress has been made by the six chapters of BUGSAY Mangingisda in La Libertad, namely the chapters of Cantupa, Martilo, North Poblacion, Pisong, San Jose, and South Poblacion with their active engagement during the training. Meanwhile, FISH Visayas Project Partners: the Local Government of La Libertad, DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative and AFOS Foundation have proactively engaged with the people’s organizations, fostering a collaborative approach to marine conservation and sustainability of income and livelihood.

Ultimately, the execution of the awareness campaign in La Libertad signifies a significant step toward fostering a community that is not just aware of the importance of marine conservation but actively involved in preserving and nurturing its coastal resources for the benefit of present and future generations.

The Sustainable Coastal Development Practices and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Information Drive aims to achieve Result Area 1: Training for Fishermen and MSMEs and Result Area 4: Resource Protection of the FISH Visayas Project.
