Cebu City, Cebu – On February 06, 2024, members of the CCCI-Assessment, Certification, and Accreditation Services Seafood Processing Cluster convened at the Cebu Chamber Centre to validate the newly developed Qualification Profile and Curriculum design for the “Seafood Plant Assistant.” This initiative, spearheaded by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (CCCI) highlights the private sector’s proactive role in aligning skills with current industry demands, thus fostering a highly competitive workforce.

Through a focus group discussion, the cluster concurred that a Seafood Plant Assistant certified by CCCI shall possess competencies aligned with industry standards. These competencies encompass operating basic machinery, maintaining workplace sanitation, ensuring product quality control, and providing support services in seafood production.

Further, the cluster discussed the training structure of the Dual Education and Training Program, which consists of formal classes and workshops at educational institutes, alongside in-company training or immersion at partner DET companies. During the in-company training, trainees engage in rotating electives or simulations, followed by practical experience on the production line under the supervision of an In-Company Trainer.

Key industry and academe partners, including Central Seafoods, Inc., HJR International, Akai Foods, Phil-Union Frozen Foods Inc., University of Cebu – Lapu Lapu Mandaue Campus, and KLN Skills and Management Training and Assessment Center, Inc., actively contributed to the discussions during the validation. Meanwhile, notable partners who were also part of the qualification profile development included Siargao’s Bounty Seafoods Corp., It’s One Eximport International, and Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology.

Looking ahead, CCCI and AFOS Foundation, as implementers of the FISH Visayas Project, will oversee the finalization of the qualification profile and curriculum design. Concurrently, the selection process for learners for the subsequent implementation of the DET Program for Seafood Production Workers and Quality Assurance profiles will be conducted in the coming months.

The Presentation of the Seafood Plant Assistant Qualification Profile and Curriculum Design aspires to achieve Result Area 2: Dual Training in the Fisheries Sector of the FISH Visayas Project.
