Good Manufacturing Practices Introduced to BUGSAY Mangingisda Chapters in La Libertad

La Libertad, Negros Oriental – In a bid to enhance value-added production and create alternative livelihoods, twenty-seven (27) members of the BUGSAY Mangingisda chapters recently completed a training program on Food Safety Management on August 30, 2024. The program aimed to introduce Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to prepare partner people’s organizations from Cantupa, Martilo, North Poblacion, Pisong, San Jose, and South Poblacion for future livelihood ventures.
The focus on seafood processing and food production highlights the significant role of women, who comprised 74% of the participants. Their active involvement underscores their commitment to ensuring food safety and creating value-added products. To date, the project’s people’s organizations are exploring opportunities in seafood processing, with the training program laying the foundation by emphasizing food safety essentials.
Facilitated by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Negros Oriental S&T Office, the training covered key aspects of GMP and operational requirements for micro and small enterprises venturing into food production and seafood processing. A highlight of the program was an interactive assessment using picture presentations, where participants identified unsafe food handling and cooking practices. This hands-on approach helped participants recognize common mistakes and gain a deeper understanding of preventing food safety hazards in real-world settings.
The successful conduct of the program was made possible through the support of FISH Visayas Project partners, including DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative, DOST Negros Oriental S&T Office, LGU La Libertad, and AFOS Foundation. The training was led by Ms. Tharrah Anne Banogon, Science Research Specialist I at DOST Negros Oriental S&T Office.
Looking ahead, a practical learning visit to Bayawan City, Siaton, and Bindoy is scheduled for September 10-11, 2024. This activity aims to provide BUGSAY Mangingisda chapters with practical knowledge, best practices, and insights on establishing a locally managed fisheries enterprise, which will be beneficial for the coastal communities of LGU La Libertad.
