San Juan, Siquijor – The Maite Resources Development Association (MRDA) President, Ms. Evelyn Malicay, has been awarded third place in the highly prestigious ‘Bayaning Mangingisda 2023’ search conducted by Kress Philippines last May 2023. The search for ‘Bayaning Mangingisda’ is an esteemed initiative that aims to recognize and elevate the unsung heroes within the fishing industry who exemplify resilience, innovation, and compassion in their work. This year, the search focused on individuals who have made significant strides in promoting sustainable fishing practices, community development, and environmental conservation.
The recognition serves as a testament to Ms. Malicay’s outstanding contributions and leadership to MRDA. With a membership of 55, including 34 women, the MRDA stands as one of the most successful fisherfolk organizations in the Municipality of San Juan. Its success can be attributed to its strong management, effective leadership, women empowerment initiatives, and a culture of cooperation among its members. Under Ms. Malicay’s leadership, MRDA has diversified its activities, venturing into various businesses that align with marine conservation. They have successfully initiated projects such as the MPA user fee-Eco-Tourism, small lending, and catering services.
Further, as part of the MRDA’s efforts to enhance the livelihood opportunities for its members, the association ventured into the bakery business. Their unique business model focuses on scaling up and improving bread production technology, incorporating seaweed as a medium. This innovative approach aligns with the key result areas of the FISH VISAYAS Project, specifically Result Area 1: Training for Fishermen & MSMEs and Result Area 3: Market Access. These endeavors not only generate income for the association but also promote sustainable practices and support the local economy.
Another notable achievement of the MRDA is its commitment to coastal conservation. MRDA pushed for a Municipal Ordinance protecting the Maite Marine Sanctuary. Further, the association collaborated with the municipal government of San Juan, the Sangguniang Bayan Council members, and the Municipal Agriculturist to conduct public consultations in each barangay to gather inputs and seek consensus on the proposed establishment of fishing bans. Such measures are essential for protecting and conserving the coastal resources within municipal waters. Recently, the association embarked on a benchmarking activity in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte, with the support of the FISH Visayas Project, further enhancing their knowledge and practices in resource protection.
Looking ahead, the MRDA envisions further strengthening its operations, particularly establishing the MRDA bakery focusing on seaweed bread. The association aims to secure appropriate processing equipment and undergo suitable training in packaging and labeling. These upgrades will enhance their operations and marketing strategies, ensuring the continued success of their ventures.
The MRDA remains committed to its mission of empowering fisherfolk and promoting sustainable practices in the fisheries sector. Through the leadership of Mrs. Evelyn V. Malicay and the collective efforts of its members, the association continues to make a significant impact, setting an inspiring example for other communities and contributing to the region’s socioeconomic growth.
As we celebrate Ms. Malicay and MRDA’s well-deserved recognition, let us be inspired by their journey and strive to create a more sustainable and vibrant fishing industry, one that uplifts the lives of coastal communities and preserves our invaluable marine resources for generations to come.
