FISH Visayas Project Introduces Food Safety, Quality & Standards to Fish Vendors and Fishers in Cordova

Cordova, Cebu – On August 24, 2023, a total of thirty-five (35) fish vendors and fishers from three people’s organizations in Cordova successfully completed a training on food safety awareness. Such intervention, a crucial part of the project’s Result Area 1, sought to equip fishers and fish vendors with essential knowledge on food safety, quality, and standards.
The training program went beyond the basic concepts, delving into a wide array of food safety hazards. Participants gained a profound understanding of biological risks, including pathogens, chemical risks related to contamination, and physical risks such as foreign objects in their products. In an engaging and practical simulation, participants learned the relevance of correct personal hygiene practices, including proper handwashing techniques and maintaining personal cleanliness. These fundamentals are important in preventing foodborne illnesses and ensuring the safety of their products for consumers.
More than this, the training emphasized proactive measures to identify and mitigate potential food safety risks within their business operations. Participants learned strategies to prevent contamination and spoilage, thereby minimizing the likelihood of incidents that could harm both their enterprises and consumers.
The training was facilitated by the Cebu Food Consultancy Group (CFCG), a group formed by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Department of Science and Technology VII, and AFOS Foundation from the OURFOOD Project.
Significantly, the beneficiaries of this training included three partner people’s organizations in Cordova: Pundok sa Progresibong Mananagat sa Bangbang (PPMB), Kapunungan sa Mananagat sa Ibabao (KMI), and Pilipog Fisherfolks Association (PFA).
This intervention aligns with the broader project objective of the FISH Visayas Project, which aims to empower fishermen and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the Central Visayas region. By enhancing food safety practices among Cordova’s fish vendors and fishers, the project contributes to safer, healthier, and more prosperous communities.
