Bantayan, Cebu – In a significant step towards fisheries management, a total of 328 students from the Cebu Technological University – Bantayan Campus completed a training program on the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) on December 11, 2023. The training program aspires to educate and empower the community, especially the younger generations to protect coastal and marine resources and change their behavior towards sustainable resource management.

Coastal resource management involves both the academe and students. Acting as a bridge between communities, government bodies, and non-government organizations, academic institutions play a crucial role in organizing dialogues, workshops, and partnerships aimed at encouraging community involvement in CRM. Additionally, academia supports programs that aid coastal communities, heighten awareness, and initiate projects focused on resource management and conservation.

On the other hand, involving students in CRM not only imparts a profound sense of responsibility but also nurtures a stewardship mindset towards coastal resources. This program serves to raise awareness and enhance comprehension of CRM principles, sustainable fishing practices, and pertinent fishery laws within the targeted demographic.

During an interactive session, facilitated by Mr. Joseph Martin Borromeo, the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) framework was discussed. The session explored management strategies, approaches, and tools crucial for effective fisheries management.

Significantly, the successful execution of this program was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. the Municipal Agriculturist Office of the Municipality of Bantayan and AFOS Foundation. The partners’ collective commitment underscores the significance of partnerships in driving positive change and sustainable practices in coastal resource management.

The Awareness Training on Basic Coastal Resource Management, Relevant Fishery Laws, and Effects of Climate Change aims to achieve Result Area 1: Training for Fishermen and MSMEs and Result Area 4: Resource Protection of the FISH Visayas Project
