La Libertad, Negros Oriental — On July 19, 2024, thirty-four (34) fisherfolk from the six BUGSAY Mangingisda chapters in La Libertad completed a two-day training on Fishing Net Setup, Mending and Patching, and Fish Aggregating Device Construction and Installation, held from July 18 to 19, 2024. The participating chapters were Cantupa, Martilo, North Poblacion, Pisong, San Jose, and South Poblacion.
The training program has equipped fishers with essential skills for repairing and maintaining their fishing nets, thus extending their lifespan. The significant benefit of this intervention is its potential to reduce the need for frequent net replacements. By learning how to mend and patch fishing nets effectively, fishers can save costs for fishing operations and minimize downtime in their activities. Further, repairing damaged nets not only contributes to financial savings but also helps reduce waste, making a positive impact on the environment and promoting sustainable fishing practices.
Additionally, the training led to the construction and installation of 18 units of Fish Aggregating Devices (FAD) for the six fisherfolk associations. The FAD employed in the training is known locally as payao or payaw. This device commonly used in the Philippines is designed to attract fish by providing a structured environment for congregation. Thus, enhances fishing efficiency by creating a floating habitat. Payaos employed in the training have drum buoys made from styrofoam and are moored in waters in depths between 250 and 400 meters, and equipped with solar-powered lights.
This training program is made possible through the proactive support of the FISH Visayas Project Partners, including the DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative, DA-BFAR Negros Oriental Fishery Office, and LGU La Libertad – Municipal Agriculture Office. The construction of the FADs also benefited from the material and labor contributions of the six BUGSAY Mangingisda chapters. Additionally, significant contributions were made by the training resource persons, DA-BFAR’s Mr. Ricardo Jorolan and BUGSAY Mangingisda leader Mr. Bertusio Absin from the North Poblacion chapter.
Looking ahead, the trained fishers aim to replicate the training and share their knowledge within the community by conducting additional training sessions on net repair and FAD construction. This initiative aims to enhance their skills with modern fishing technologies, boost production and income, and contribute to marine environmental protection.
