Bantayan, Cebu – On September 19, 2024, 42 fishers in Bantayan completed a training program on standardized fish drying processing using coconut-based brine. Among them, 8 participants were selected as trainers for the operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the mechanical dryer.

Through the first phase of the FISH Visayas Project, a mechanical dryer was provided to the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Sulangan Panitugan Planters Association (SPPA) on Bantayan Island to enhance their fish drying methods. This dryer aims to improve the livelihoods of local fishermen, as Bantayan is renowned for its dried fish production. The equipment is designed to dry fish more quickly, prevent moisture-related issues, and reduce losses compared to traditional open-air drying.

To ensure ongoing and optimal use of the equipment, a comprehensive training program on the operations and maintenance of the mechanical dryer is essential. This training promotes sustainability by ensuring that the dryer remains in top working condition under the care of the fisherfolk organizations. Engaged people’s organizations included Sulangan Panitugan Planters Association (SPPA), Luyongbaybay Farmers Fishermen Association (LUFFA), and Purok Sambag.

Notably, the project in collaboration with DOST Cebu PSTO has developed a training manual in both English and Cebuano. The guidelines and work instructions provided will help the fisherfolk associations, with support from the Chamber, maintain the mechanical dryer installed on the island. Additionally, the newly trained trainers will be able to develop a pool of trainers to support the maintenance of other mechanical dryers across Bantayan.

Following the training, training manuals, working instructions, and IEC materials will be finalized and produced through the project. This initiative will ensure that the fisherfolk are well-equipped with the knowledge and resources needed to effectively operate and maintain the mechanical dryer, thereby enhancing their fish processing practices and promoting sustainability within their communities.

The Training of Trainers on the Operation, Maintenance and Troubleshooting of Mechanical Dryer and Standardized Fish Drying Processing aspires to achieve Result Area 1: Training for fisherfolks and MSMEs and Result Area 3: Expanding market access of the FISH Visayas Project.
