La Libertad, Negros Oriental — On November 29, 2024, twenty-seven (27) fish processors from La Libertad completed a Training on Product Packaging and Labeling, initiated through the FISH Visayas Project. The initiative aims to strengthen the product branding efforts of the newly established La Libertad Fish Processors Association (LAFIPA), enabling them to expand market reach for their dried squid, dried fish, and bottled Spanish sardines.
Elevating Product Branding for a Wider Market Reach
Product competitiveness extends beyond price and quality to include packaging and presentation—key factors that influence consumer appeal. The training program emphasized the critical elements of product packaging and labeling in alignment with the Department of Health (DOH) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards. Participants gained valuable insights into regulatory requirements, mandatory label information, and effective visual presentation techniques.
As a newly formed association, LAFIPA was also briefed on the processes and requirements for registration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), ensuring compliance with relevant rules and regulations. DOLE registration is expected to bolster the association’s access to additional support mechanisms.
Comprehensive Support and Resources
In addition to the guidance provided by the FISH Visayas Project, the DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative’s Business Development Services program presented its offerings, further empowering the association. The local government of La Libertad also provided updates on the status and location of the fish processing facility designated for LAFIPA, a critical component for their production and operational needs.
To enhance their capacity, participants received essential equipment, including a printer, a laptop, a vacuum packing machine, printable stickers, and pigment ink. These resources enable LAFIPA to implement the skills and techniques acquired during the training effectively.
Engaged Fish Processors
The training engaged 27 fish processors, 74% of whom were women, reflecting the inclusive nature of the initiative. Participants represented federated members of LAFIPA from six BUGSAY Mangingisda associations: Martilo, Pisong, San Jose, North Poblacion, South Poblacion, and Cantupa.
Collaborative Efforts Driving Success
The program’s success was driven by the collaborative efforts of the FISH Visayas Project partners, including the DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative, the Municipality of La Libertad, and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Negros Oriental Provincial Office. Technical sessions were led by Mr. Sednnie Quozon and Mr. Shem Silva.
Looking Ahead
The FISH Visayas Project remains committed to supporting LAFIPA in producing market-ready products that comply with regulatory standards. Future training initiatives will focus on product development, entrepreneurship, and marketing to help LAFIPA further develop and introduce their products to a broader market.
