FISH Visayas Project, LGU La Libertad & DCCCO Upkeep Natural Resources thru Community-Based Rehabilitation of Mangroves

La Libertad, Negros Oriental – Fifty-one (51) fisherfolks from the people’s organizations of BUGSAY Mangingisda completed the two-day training on Community-Based Rehabilitation of Mangroves from February 21-22, 2023 at the Lalimar Beach Resort, Barangay San Jose, La Libertad.

The training focuses on a community-based strategy wherein coastal communities are trained to be more responsive and responsible stewards of the coastal environment. The guidelines on Community-Based Rehabilitation of Mangroves include instructions for community organizing, establishing mangrove nurseries (propagating, collecting, handling, and transporting of seedlings), establishing plantations, and managing mangroves.

At the end of the training, participants have enriched their skills in the techniques and practices for mangrove seedling production, plantation establishment towards rehabilitation, and conservation. Participants have also increased their awareness of mangrove-based and related livelihood activities and practiced leadership skills in community building, resource management, and income generation. These results will lead to the improvement of socioeconomic and environmental conditions in La Libertad, in particular, the reduction of the effects of storms by protecting community members and their coastal livelihoods. More than that, the training further improves the sustainable use of mangrove resources in the locality.
***The conduct of the Training on Community-Based Rehabilitation of Mangroves in La Libertad aspires to achieve Result Area 1: Training for Fishermen and MSMEs and Result Area 4: Resource Protection of the FISH Visayas Project.
