FISH Visayas Project Kicks-off Engagement with the People’s Organizations in Cordova

Cordova, Cebu – 161 fisherfolks proactively participated in the onsite visit of the FISH Visayas Project on March 03, 2023, in Barangay Pilipog, Bangbang, and Ibabao, Cordova, Cebu.

The discussions during the visit elicited a list of potential programs and initiatives that aim to improve income and livelihood within the coastal community of Cordova. Series of training were further identified for the project beneficiaries, which include the people’s organizations of Pundok sa Pobreng Mananagat sa Bangbang (PPMB), Sapunungan sa Mananagat sa Ibabao (KMI), and Pilipog Fisherfolks Association (PFA).

Supporting the conduct of the site visit is LGU Cordova’s Fisheries Technician, Ms. Mildred Uy. FISH Visayas Project’s Area Coordinator, Ms. Nivani Lasala; AFOS Foundation’s Project Manager and Country Representative, Ms. Yvette Hope Labus; and Knowledge Management Coordinator, Mary Ruth Ochavillo, were present to provide an overview of the project and gather relevant information on the needs of the fisherfolk communities.
Following the activity, a baseline survey will be conducted from March 06 to 24, 2023, to gather data describing the fisheries status of the FISH Visayas Project sites, including Cordova. Seventeen fisherfolks from Cordova will participate as respondents to the survey that will then elicit data and information on fishers’ demographics, fishing methods, types and volume of harvest, income situation, condition of employment, presence of alternative livelihood, fishing boat gears and inventory, and training needs assessment. These data will then support better design, alignment, and implementation activities toward achieving the targeted Results of the FISH Visayas Project.
