FISH Visayas Project Upskills Fishers Thru Training on Fishing Net Set-up, Mending and Patching

Ubay, Bohol – Twenty (20) fishers from the people’s organizations of Barangay Guintaboan Fisherfolk Association (BGFA), Cagting Small Farmers and Fishers Association (CSFFA), and Cuya Farmers and Fisherman Association (CFFA) completed the three-day training on fishing net set-up and repair of bottom set gillnets conducted from May 04 to 06, 2023 at the Barangay Guintaboan, Ubay, Bohol.

The training concentrates on sustainable methods of installing and repairing damaged fishing nets following the prescribed fishing equipment and gears. Notably, prior to the training, a relevant number of fishers were untrained to install new nets and conduct repairs. To reduce the costs and downtime of hiring another professional to do the technical work, such practical training is provided to further upskill and upscale the fishers as multipliers. Ultimately, the training aims to empower fishermen and communities to earn worthwhile livelihoods to increase production and income whilst preserving the marine environment.

The training was implemented thru the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (BCCI), supervised by the Municipal Agriculturist’s Office of LGU Ubay, and facilitated by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) – Bohol. A second batch of the training is conducted from May 15 to 17, which primarily concentrates on upskilling twenty (20) more fishers on crab entangling, net set-up, and repair, while a third batch will be conducted from May 18 to 20, for training another twenty (20) fishers on gill net set-up, mending and patching.

***The Fisherfolk Skills Training on Fishing Net Set-up, Mending and Patching aspires to achieve Result Area 1: Training for Fishermen and MSMEs of the FISH Visayas Project.
