Cordova, Cebu – On November 9, 2023, the Local Government of Cordova, in collaboration with the FISH Visayas Project, successfully concluded a three-day Reef Check Monitoring for the marine sanctuaries of Alegria, Gilutongan, and Nalusuan in Cordova, Cebu. This monitoring effort generated valuable data with the aim of overseeing and safeguarding marine sanctuaries within the municipality, thereby contributing to the conservation and sustainable management of coral reef ecosystems. Notably, critical data were collected including coral health and the diversity of marine life, fish species, invertebrates, and other organisms.

To ensure comprehensive coverage of the three sanctuaries, the divers were organized into three teams. These teams consisted of divers from the AFOS Foundation, DA-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Marine Environment and Resources Foundation, Inc., as well as local offices such as Marine Watch and the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office. Significantly, the LGU’s Municipal Agriculturist Office facilitated the successful conduct of the activity.

Subsequent to the data collection phase is the consolidation and processing of the data by the Marine Environment and Resources Foundation, Inc. (MERF). The results are scheduled for presentation to the partners by December 2023. In essence, this collaborative effort underscores a shared commitment to preserving and managing the health of coral reef ecosystems within the municipality.

The Reef Check Monitoring aspires to achieve Result Area 4: Resource Protection of the FISH Visayas Project.
