San Juan & Siquijor, Siquijor – On November 13, 2023, a total of 2,339 students in the primary and secondary levels in San Juan and Siquijor completed a series of educational learning sessions on basic coastal management, fisheries management, Marine Protected Area (MPA) management, and climate change. The learning sessions aspire to instill awareness in the young population, teaching them to be responsible citizens in the community.

Many communities in Siquijor heavily rely on fisheries for their livelihoods. Recognizing the significance of the coastal population, a primary focus of the educational initiative was on instilling an understanding of sustainable fisheries management from an early age. By providing knowledge and insights, the project aimed to ensure the perpetuation of responsible practices among students. This approach empowers them to grasp the delicate balance essential for thriving fisheries, encouraging the adoption of sustainable fishing methods and fostering advocacy for the conservation of marine ecosystems.

Significantly, a vital component of the initiative was educating students about climate change and its impacts on coastal communities. By enhancing their understanding of environmental challenges, students are better equipped to adapt to changing conditions. Additionally, the knowledge gained positions them to actively contribute to initiatives that address and mitigate the effects of climate change on local ecosystems.

Notably, the learning sessions were conducted through a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders. Partnerships with the Siquijor Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (SCCII), DA-BFAR Siquijor Provincial Fishery Office, LGU San Juan, LGU Siquijor, and the Department of Education ensured the success and reach of the educational program. Participating schools included Tag-ibo Elementary School, San Juan Integrated School – Elementary and Secondary, Solangon Elementary School, Tambisan Elementary School, Tambisan National High School, Cang-alwang Elementary School, Cang-alwang National High School, Banban Elementary School, Banban National High School, Candanay Elementary School, Pangi Elementary School, Siquijor Integrated High School, Siquijor Integrated Elementary School, Cangmunag Elementary School, Timbaon Elementary School, Catulayan National High School, and Catulayan Elementary School.

In essence, the intervention’s emphasis on sustainable fisheries management, marine protected areas, and climate change awareness positions the younger generation as well-informed and environmentally conscious leaders. This approach not only prepares them for the challenges within their local context but also nurtures a commitment to the long-term health and resilience of Siquijor’s coastal communities.

The FISH Visayas School Information Drive aspires to achieve Result Area 1: Training for Fishermen and MSMEs and Result Area 4: Resource Protection of the FISH Visayas Project.
