Iloilo City, Iloilo – In a step towards sustainable aquaculture, a delegation of 20 participants from Negros Oriental, including municipal officials from the Local Government Unit of La Libertad fishers from partner people’s organizations, members of DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative, and a representative from AFOS Foundation, recently concluded a three-day learning visit at the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) in Iloilo City on November 15, 2023.

The primary focus of the visit was to assess the feasibility of establishing a mangrove crab grow-out production in La Libertad, leveraging its expansive hectares of mangrove trees and the abundance of wild crabs in coastal areas.

The participants, led by LGU La Libertad’s Municipal Mayor, Hon. Emmanuel Laurence Daniel L. Iway recognized the paramount importance of acquiring extensive knowledge and technical expertise in mangrove crab culture for the successful implementation of such initiatives. Technicalities of the intervention were discussed during the visit included the dietary requirements of the crabs, water salinity levels, species distribution, spacing, feed types, and survival rates. SEAFDEC recommended that LGU La Libertad conduct a feasibility study in selected sites for crab grow-out production and collaborate with SEAFDEC for the skills capacitation of technical staff in the future.

Notably, the learning visit proved fruitful as participants explored various SEAFDEC facilities, including the Aquaculture Division, Milkfish (Bangus) breeding site, SEAFDEC FishWorld, and the Dumangas Brackishwater Station.

Following the learning visit, the partners are set to engage in discussions to outline the next steps regarding the feasibility of establishing a mangrove crab grow-out production in La Libertad. The recommendations provided by SEAFDEC will be pivotal in shaping these discussions.

In essence, the practical learning visit at SEAFDEC on Mangrove Crab Culture provided participants with valuable insights, best practices, and practical approaches in mangrove crab culture and management, specifically tailored for the context of La Libertad. If implemented, this initiative could serve as an alternative livelihood or market for Mangrove Crab farming, benefiting the six BUGSAY fisherfolk associations in La Libertad.

The practical learning visit at SEAFDEC on Mangrove Crab Culture aspires to achieve Result Area 1: Training for Fisherfolks and MSMEs and Result Area 3: Market Access of the FISH Visayas Project.
