Siquijor, Siquijor – In a step towards establishing a sustainable income for fisherfolks, twenty-nine (29) fishers completed the Training on Packaging and Labeling to upskill partner people’s organizations in improving their respective products: the seaweed toasted bread, deboned bangus, and bangus sardines.

Understanding and adhering to labeling and packaging regulations is crucial for people’s organizations to avoid legal issues and ensure that products meet the required standards. It creates consistent and high-quality packaging that contributes to the overall image of the brand and reflects professionalism, reliability, and a commitment to delivering a quality product. In essence, proper labeling and packaging help products stand out in a competitive market. Unique and well-presented packaging can differentiate a product from others, attracting the attention of consumers and creating a competitive advantage.

Facilitated by the Siquijor Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (SCCII) and the DTI Region 7 Siquijor Provincial Office, the FISH Visayas Project successfully engaged fishers from the Maite Resource Development Association (MRDA), Caticugan Farmers and Fisherfolks Association (CAFFA) and the Siquijor Inland Fish Groomers Association (SIFGA). Significantly, showing full support to the activity with their presence are DA- Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) Siquijor Provincial Fishery Office, the DOST Siquijor PSTC, and LGU San Juan.

To facilitate the ongoing progress of product development, the project has supplied essential equipment to POs, enabling them to create labels and packaging that adhere to government-mandated standards. The provided equipment comprises three sets of vacuum packing machines, printers, desktop computers, pigment inks, and heat gun blowers, all handed over by the partners to the people’s organizations of MRDA, SIFGA, and CAFFA. Prior to the training, the DOST has further approved a grant for the improvement of bakery equipment to MRDA, and fishery equipment to CAFFA and SIFGA. With this support, the POs are expected to consistently enhance the quality of their products in collaboration with the project partners, preparing them for successful market introduction.

The Training on Packaging and Labeling aims to achieve Result Area 1: Training for Fishermen and MSMEs and Result Area 3: Market Access of the FISH Visayas Project.
