Ubay, Bohol – On January 29, 2024, a total of 109 fishers and youths received training on Marine Protected Area (MPA) Sustainable Management and Maintenance as part of the rehabilitation efforts of the FISH Visayas Project for the Barangay Guintaboan Marine Sanctuary in Ubay, Bohol.

The Barangay Guintaboan Marine Sanctuary is a newly established MPA that covers eight hectares of core, buffer, and regulated reserved zones. The FISH Visayas Project has identified the sanctuary as one of the model MPA sites in Bohol. However, the sanctuary’s permanent observation post and demarcation line were damaged by tropical cyclones, causing MPA managers and local sea wardens (bantay dagat) to express concern about illegal fishers entering the protected zone due to unclear markings and the absence of an observation post.

To address this concern and rehabilitate the MPA, the project executes the training program covering the significance and advantages of MPAs, fishery laws and regulations, MPA monitoring and assessment methods, and MPA management effectiveness assessment tools.

Remarkably, intervention is in collaboration with the Municipality of Ubay, Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Marine Protected Area – Provincial Technical Working Group (MPA-PTWG), Bohol Provincial Environment and Management Office (BPEMO), DENR- Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) – Bohol Provincial Fishery Office, and AFOS Foundation.

Following the training, the rehabilitation efforts will include the setting up of an observation post and the installation of marker buoys and blinkers in the sanctuary. All activities are in close coordination between the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, AFOS Foundation, and the Municipality of Ubay for the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of activities. Moving forward, the established observation post shall be turned over to the LGU, with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Signing Ceremony. Future plans include the conduct of a seeding activity of the Juvenile Giant Clam to further improve the ecosystem within the sanctuary.

Ultimately, the training aims to strengthen the awareness of the fisherfolk community as stewards in marine conversation and biodiversity.

The Training on MPA Sustainable Management and Maintenance aims to achieve Result Area 1: Training for Fishermen and MSMEs and Result Area 4: Resource Protection of the FISH Visayas Project.
