ADVOCATING FOR SUSTAINABLE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

FISH Visayas Project Promotes Solid Waste Management Practices to Students at Pres. Carlos P. Garcia, Bohol

Pres. Carlos P. Garcia, Bohol – As a notable stride towards safeguarding coastal communities, 1,276 students, teachers, and residents from Pres. Carlos P. Garcia, Bohol received training on Sustainable Solid Waste Management on February 02, 2024. Fully endorsed by the municipality, the intervention successfully engaged participants from Aguining National High School, Bonbonon National High School, and San Jose Integrated High School of PCPG, Bohol.

This intervention serves as crucial in recognizing that coastal communities, such as Pres. Carlos P. Garcia is highly susceptible to the adverse effects of inadequate waste management practices due to their proximity to water bodies. Improper waste disposal can result in marine ecosystem pollution, endangering marine life and compromising habitats. The training, spearheaded by the FISH Visayas Project, educates students on waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and proper disposal techniques, thus mitigating pollution and safeguarding coastal environments.

Facilitated by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office of Pres. Carlos P. Garcia, the training provided an interactive discussion, providing practical examples of solid waste management programs. Significantly, the training program served as as a platform for community input on enhancing municipal waste management plans and formulating policy strategies.

Notably, the Training Program was conducted in collaboration with FISH Visayas Project Partners, including the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office of LGU PCPG, Barangay Officials of Aguining, Bonbon, and San Jose, fishers of Aguininghong Pundok sa Yanong Mananagat (KAGAMASA) and Kahugpungan sa Gagmay’ng Mananagat sa Saguise (APYM), the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and AFOS Foundation.

Ultimately, the training empowers coastal communities like PCPG to take ownership of their environmental stewardship. By equipping students as future leaders with the knowledge and skills to manage waste sustainably, communities can become more self-sufficient in addressing environmental challenges and promoting resilience in the face of environmental changes.

The Training on Sustainable Solid Waste Management aims to achieve Result Area 1: Training for Fishermen and MSMEs and Result Area 4: Resource Protection of the FISH Visayas Project.
