FISH Visayas Project – LGU La Libertad & DCCCO Conduct its Annual Mangrove Planting Marathon in 6 Coastal Barangays

La Libertad, Negros Oriental – More than 150 fishers from the six BUGSAY people’s organizations and 170 students from the La Libertad Technical Vocational School planted a total of 60,000 mangrove propagules in the coastal barangays of Cantupa, Martilo, North Poblacion, Pisong, San Jose and South Poblacion in La Libertad, Negros Oriental.
The Municipality of La Libertad comprises of 29 Barangays, 6 of which are along the coast and are vulnerable to natural disasters. The planting of mangrove propagules transpires to restore the damaged mangrove ecosystem caused by Typhoon Odette in 2021 and to further protect the people and their livelihood in times of typhoons and other natural calamities. Supporting and facilitating the activity is the Allied Mangrove Planting Organizations (AMPO) with the FISH VISAYAS Project partners – LGU La Libertad, Negros Oriental and DCCCO Multipurpose Cooperative.
This activity aligns with Result 4 of FISH Visayas Project’s goal, which seeks to safeguard natural resources and preserve the livelihoods of fishermen by rehabilitating degraded ecosystems, including mangroves, seagrass, or coral reefs, to promote biodiversity and enhance climate resilience. Restoring and protecting the mangrove ecosystem is essential as it serves as a natural barrier against future natural disasters and maintains the ecological balance of the coastal areas.
