FISH Visayas Project Conducts Baseline Survey Describing the Status of Fisheries in the LGUs of Alburquerque, PCPG, Tagbilaran, Ubay, Bantayan, Cordova, La Libertad, San Juan & Siquijor

Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental, Siquijor – 399 respondents from the project’s nine partner LGUs were successfully interviewed for the Baseline Survey Describing the Status of Fisheries in the FISH Visayas Project Sites. The survey implementation was conducted in the period of three weeks from March 13 to 31, 2023 at the respective barangays of 26 partner people’s organizations.

Recognizing the need for an in-depth understanding of the demographics, status quo, and demands of the project areas, the FISH Visayas Project conducts a baseline survey that seeks to examine the descriptive cross-sectional analyses of individual fishing households in terms of income, living standard, and fishing operations. The data collected aims to support the project management to better design, align and implement its activities more systematically, toward achieving the targeted results of the project. In particular, the survey corresponds to the objectives and the four (4) key result areas of the FISH Visayas Project namely; training for fishermen and MSMEs, dual training in fisheries, market access, and resource protection.

The 399 respondents for the study are the fishing and fish farming households, listed as members of the partner people’s organizations in these areas. The project has employed simple random sampling with a proportional allocation method in selecting the respondents.

The survey implementation was facilitated by FISH Visayas Project Team, which includes Knowledge Management, Area Coordinators, and Field Officers. Data collectors outside of the project were engaged also engaged to support the KIIs. Prior to the survey implementation, the project team and the data collectors were trained on the research instruments for familiarity with the questions and information to be collected.

At present, data are encoded and processed for analysis by the engaged short-term experts from the University of the Philippines – Visayas through Dr. Gay Defiesta and Dr. Hanny John Mediodia. The target presentation of the results is scheduled for the 4th week of April 2023.
